3 Top Selling Ideas for Mother’s Day

It’s time for Mother’s Day! Here are 3 top selling ideas for your cake business to reel in business and sales. 🥳

I personally believe it can be hard to find that perfect gift for mom. And being a mom myself, the typical Mother’s Day gifts can be meh.

I know I’m not alone in thinking this, but I also know I have a business to run and need to make the sales.

So here are my out of the box ideas that bakers can sell for Mother’s Day. And yes, I would love to receive these as a gift myself. 😉

#1 Tasting Boxes aka Cake Flights

The Station Bakery’s Cake Flights

If you didn’t know, tasting boxes are really popular right now. Not only because its wedding season, but because people are looking for new, “not so expensive” options to feed their sweets cravings.

The time of fully blown custom cakes has simmered and smaller, easy to eat and enjoy items are growing in demand. That’s also why mini cakes and cake slices are so popular right now as well!

Cookie Butter Cake Slices

Cake tasting boxes make it easy to try multiple cake flavors (hello my fellow indecisive friends 👋🏽) at one time. More and more people are looking for these as an option and they are great for bakers to offer because they aren’t as time consuming as a custom cake. Oh, they don’t need to be fancy either!

Simply bake up a cake, add buttercream, slice and package. To add that special Mother’s Day touch that mom will love, consider adding my custom Mother’s Day Labels.

Here’s the cheat sheet to adding to your menu:

Cake Flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Cookie Butter. Grab the recipes here.

Buttercreams: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Cookie Butter. Grab the buttercream recipes here.

Pricing: Deciding on pricing for your products can be tough. How much should you charge? Is the price too much? Is the price too low?

Honestly, no one can tell you how much to charge but there are some basic principles you can apply to determine a number that makes sense for you.

  1. Cost out your supplies. This includes ingredients, packaging, and labels.

  2. Calculate your time. How long does it take you to make, bake and package your products? Multiply that time by how much you choose to pay yourself. If you aren’t sure how long it will take, guesstimate…on the higher end.

  3. Factor in Overheads. This is any fees you may be paying like the cost to host your payment platform.

  4. Calculate Business Profit. This is NOT the same as what you pay yourself. This money goes back into your business. It is usually calculated by percentage anywhere from 10-50%.

  5. Take into consideration any processing fees you may incur on your orders.

  6. Total the amount and divide by the number of products you are making to sell.

This is just a quick overview, but if you want to calculate your prices in detail and save yourself the headache of doing math check out my cake pricing calculator!

#2 Cake Decorating Brunch Experience

Thinking outside of the box, I am going to put out there hosting a Mother’s Day Cake Decorating Brunch Experience is top tier.

Experiences can leave lasting impressions even more so than a gift like flowers. Create an experience for mom to get out and get creative. This idea combines experience with product and allows your business to be an integral part of the celebration.

Your guests can decorate mini cakes, small cakes, cupcakes, or even cake slices! Choose which works best for your skill level and is the easiest for you to implement.

This is also a great opportunity to partner with other local businesses to create an unforgettable moment for moms.

But if you choose to go solo here’s the game plan:

  1. Choose your theme.

  2. Make all products ahead of time. Cake, buttercream (color buttercream ahead of time as well), toppings and decorations.

  3. Gather decorating tools. Depending on what you choose to decorate, you may need more or less supplies. Factor in the number of guests to determine how. much of each supply is needed. Can some supplies be shared?

  4. Create a class outline to help the process go smoothly. Bonus points for images.

  5. Find a location or go to the customers.

  6. Promote, promote, promote!

#3 Sell Small Cakes

This is a classic move, but we know the classics hold so much power!

Offer small decorated cakes for families to celebrate mom or even for them to just enjoy themselves!

Choose a beautiful design, whether it is a classic design, something more modern, or unique for the more spicy mamas.

Go with classic or unique flavors like mimosas, rose, strawberry lemonade, etc.

#4 Table Runner Cake

Suprise! Here’s one more top selling idea for Mother’s Day for your cake business.

Have you seen the trending table runner cakes? While there are varying opinions on this style of cake, I do believe there is a place for it this Mother’s day!

Here’s the idea.

Instead a cake that runs the entire length of a table, just do a cake that can sit on the family table. Think family tea party vibes with white flowing linen, fresh florals in skinny vases and your beautiful cake as the center piece! Perfect for a special day outside with mom.

Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Selling!

Mother’s Day is a unique selling opportunity for you and your customers to show love to the ones they care about the most.
