“What could you do if you decided today was your day?”

Diversifying Income with Digital Products

Diversifying your income is creating multiple ways to make money for yourself. This is like a safety net that can reduce pressure from changes in the market and unexpected events (hello inflation!).

But my favorite reason is that it frees you from being constrained to only making money by putting in physical work making cakes in your home bakery. Imagine reducing your load, but making the same if not more money by doing less! 🤩

Digital Products

You can diversify your income through digital products. These are any product or service that is delivered and consumed electronically.

Whether you are a seasoned entrepreneur looking to expand your product line or a beginner looking to break into the digital product space, creating and selling digital products can open up new opportunities allowing you to leverage technology and make more money passively.

And the best part? It’s mostly ALL PROFIT!

👉🏽 But it’s not about just copying something from someone else, slapping your name on it and throwing it up on your site. You can really create a thriving, sustainable income stream through solving problems and providing value for others through digital products.

And that’s the key: creating digital products that have value and what’s valued today is CONVENIENCE. If you can create a product that makes a part of someones’ life or business easier and more convenient, you will win!

Benefits of Adding Digital Products to Your Business

There are many advantages to adding digital products to your cake business.

  1. Low overhead costs. There are very few costs you have to pay with creating digital products as compared to your cake business. No ingredients or supplies needed. Just the internet!

  2. High profits. Because there is little financial buy in with making digital products, majority of the money you make will be profit! 🥳

  3. Less time commitment. Digital products can be created once and sold over and over again with no limit. This means you only spend the initial time creating the product and only have to maintain it.

  4. Hands off. With digital products you are able to make money while you sleep, while on vacation, while sick, while caring for your family, at any point and time because it the sales process is all automated. The money just rolls in.

Getting Started with Digital Products

Just like with baking, identifying your niche and target audience is a key component in being successful in selling digital products.

Finding Your Niche

You’ve probably heard this time and time again, but you need to decide on a niche.

A niche is a specialized segment of a market and choosing a niche will help give you focus around the digital products you will make.

Thankfully for you my baking friend, you already have a high level niche: baking, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, treats etc. But niching down further in these categories will give you even more clarity.

Consider factors such as your interests, skills, and experience.

Identifying Your Target Audience

Your target audience is a specific group of people within your niche.

When defining your target audience, think about demographics such as age, gender, location, income level, and interests.

Identifying your target audience will guide you on creating marketing strategies that they can relate to making selling your digital products easier.

Brainstorming Ideas

Now that you have identified your target audience, their needs and gaps in the market, you can come up with ideas that they can relate to.

Take some time and on a piece of paper or the notes app on your phone, start writing down every idea that comes to your mind for your digital product. There are no right or wrong answers, just let your mind flow with ideas.

Once you have a list, you can go back through and begin refining them to land on your first digital product to sell.

Examples of digital products:

  • e-books

  • guides

  • checklists

  • planners

  • recipes

  • templates

  • downloadables

  • workbooks

  • cheat sheets

  • calendars

  • etc.

My mind is always loaded with ideas for digital products - too much for me to handle alone. So I have curated a list of over 100 digital product ideas that have already been researched, thought out, and are SPECIFIC and RELEVANT to the baking industry. Creating Your First Digital Product

Creating digital products is now easier than ever with templates available all over the internet to help you out.

Where to Create Your First Digital Product?

My favorite place is Canva. Canva has many features that make creating your digital products a breeze, including tons of templates that can be used as a foundation to build your digital product.

I recommend getting a pro account because you will have access to so many more features, but you can make it happen on a free account as well.

There are many templates that are also available on Etsy including products labeled as MRR, PLR, and DFY.

While I do believe there is a place for these, I highly discourage building your brand off of these as you might be “influenced” to do.

MRR, PLR, and DFY products are being mishandled and it is not worth the potential damage it can do to your brand if you partake in this scheme as well. You will understand this more when you look at what’s being offered, and I will be sharing more on this topic soon.

Until then, do your research and remember, I warned you!

Plus, I’m making it so much easier for you with over 100 actual ideas that will provide value to our community! So don’t forget to grab your copy!

Tips for creating your digital product:

  • Make sure your product provides a clear and valuable solution

  • Make your product easy to use and understand

  • Make sure your product is accurate and complies with laws

  • Make it look good

  • Test it for errors

  • Make sure the price matches the value

Marketing Your First Digital Product

Your digital product was all done in vain if you don’t invest the time to market it. This is how your target audience is going to know your digital product exists.

Promoting Your Digital Product

You cannot be afraid to market and promote your product. This means showing up and talking about your digital product as much as possible.

If you have taken the time to create a digital product that you are proud of that will be of value to your target client, then you must shout it from the rooftops so your target audience can know it exists.

The benefits in talking about your product at every chance you get is that you get to build trust with your audience. The gurus say a potential buyer needs to see your product seven times before they make the decision to buy, so you have to get to posting and posting A LOT.

But don’t just post anything. Post content that is relevant and relatable to your target audience. This is why it is important to map that out.

Other benefits are that you begin to get comfortable in promoting, it shows that you have confidence in your products and you also get to learn from feedback on how to market and promote your product even better!

Selling Your Digital Product

Before you can post your digital product for sale, you will need to create a product listing photo. You can create this easily using the templates in Canva and add to your site of choice.

Simply type in “digital product mock up” in the search bar and choose one you like!

Selling

There are many platforms you can use to sell your digital products and a bit of research will need to be done on your end to make sure you choose the right platform that fits your needs best.

StanStore:

The most popular platform right now for selling digital products is StanStore. This platform was specifically built to help you host and sell your digital products effortlessly. It’s simple to use which makes it great for beginners and experienced creators alike. It’s $29 a month, but you can get a 14-day trial to start. You can check it out here.

I personally started my digital product journey on ETSY. I then expanded to my own website hosted by SquareSpace, then added Podia and now I making the transition over to Teachable.

Here’s a quick overview of each.

Etsy:

Etsy is a great beginner platform because it already has a built in audience and marketing to help your products be found by the right customers. This means that’s less work you have to do to build your own community!

Many people have qualms about Etsy because it does take a percentage from every sale you make, but honestly, that is a small price to pay for the amount of money you can make! And FREE advertising to an already built audience!

Oh, and most platforms take some form of a fee anyways so there’s that!

When you are ready to open your shop, go through my link so you can get 40 FREE LISTINGS for your Etsy account to get you started!

Be sure you use this link when you are ready to create your shop. If you leave from the page before creating your shop, the link for your free listings will not apply.

SquareSpace:

I recommend having some form of your own website for many reasons and I like the ease of building a custom branded website using SquareSpace. This is what I currently use to host my website. Depending on your needs, SquareSpace is like an all in one system and if you don’t mind putting in a little work to edit their templates, this is a great platform to host your digital products, plus grow into other aspects of monetizing your business.

There is a monthly fee that you pay, but it allows you to scale your business without having to switch to a new platform.

Podia:

What drew me to Podia was the ability to host classes with videos, have a membership, and post an unlimited amount of products.

Podia is simple to use and is rapidly growing with a lot of new features. You can start your digital product journey on Podia with a free account and upgrade to very affordable plans with 0 fees.

This is all very minimal compared to how much you are going to be profiting from selling your digital products!

Teachable:

I decided to upgrade to Teachable because I needed a more robust platform to house my constantly growing online business. This is a great all in one platform that will allow my business to scale even more. This option is a bit pricier than the others, but that’s all a part of a business that is growing and thriving financially! As we discuss more ways to diversify your income, you will see how upgrading to Teachable is the best move for me!

Now you have all the options out there to do your research and make the best decision for you to sell your digital products.
